Development Director


Summary:

Hartman Non-Profit seeks an adaptable and highly-motivated professional with 3 to 5 years of fund development experience to support the development team in the role of Development Director. Hartman Non-Profit is creating a new Development Office and therefore seeks a candidate who can help establish the essential systems of a best practices fundraising and the associated development program.

 

This role is responsible for the general oversight and day to day operation of all fund development operations including all fund raising activities, promotions, special events, policies and procedures, record keeping and support.  A new position in the organization, the Director, will have the opportunity to build the development function.

The key objectives for this position are to:

­   Leverage Hartman Non-Profit’s programs and relationships to secure major gifts and/or grants from corporations, foundations, organizations, and individuals,

­   Implement the initial “building blocks” for an individual gifts program, and

­   Establish a development program infrastructure that includes a donor tracking database, donor communications, and evaluation and reporting systems.

 

Duties and Accountabilities of the role:

  • Create and execute a strategy for a large sustained base of annual individual donors
  • Oversee organization of special events.
  • Plan and implement all fund development activities of Hartman Non-Profit, under the direction of the Executive Director and/or Board.
  • Call on and meet with prospective donors.
  • Accept gifts from donors and assure that receipts and thank you letters are sent promptly and in accordance with policy.
  • Prepare grant applications for Organization projects.
  • Plan and attend all functions of the Organization, including special events for fundraising purposes.
  • Maintain Organization calendar for annual activities, meetings, etc.
  • Prepare reports for Board and Executive Director.
  • Attend all meetings of the Organization Board and appropriate committees.
  • Assist in the orientation of new Board members, volunteers, and committee members.
  • Maintain all donor and fund development records.
  • Work with appropriate staff and consultants to create all collateral materials for Organization, including brochures, newsletters, special projects and annual reports.

 

Some of the anticipated position responsibilities include:

Individual Donor Development

  • Establish the early building blocks on which Hartman Non-Profit can build a broad-based individual giving program.
  • Assist with the design and development of a donor page on appropriate websites.
  • Coordinate print, web, and social media designed to promote Hartman Non-Profit and its work to external audiences.
  • Design and implement strategies for building a contact list.

 

Events Planning and Execution

  • Implement occasional events to support the development function.
  • Help organize and implement an Annual Event for Hartman Non-Profit.
  • Organize other events (public and invitation only) to help promote Hartman Non-Profit.

 

Corporate and Foundation Relations

  • Develop and implement a development strategy to secure corporate and foundation contributions and sponsorships
  • Develop sponsorship levels and benefit agreements.
  • Identify, qualify and prioritize potential funders for specific educational initiatives.
  • Facilitate the development of relationships with funders through presentations, personal meetings, regular communications or arranging for meetings with Hartman Non-Profit’s management and/or program staff.
  • Track and meet grant submission and reporting deadlines (in conjunction with Hartman Non-Profit’s Business Office).
  • Draft and oversee the development of funding proposals to help ensure proper submission.
  • Coordinate the gathering of information (budgets, materials, evaluation reports, etc.) to support grant requests and reporting.
  • Track the fulfillment of grants with program staff and serve as an ongoing liaison to donors.

 

Major Gifts

  • Work with the Board of Directors and executive staff to identify, cultivate, and solicit major gift prospects and donors.
  • Implement a management system to support major gifts.
  • Lead the production of special letters, gift acknowledgments and other communications with major gift donors.

Systems and Infrastructure

  • Create the fundamental systems required to run a best practices fundraising program.
  • Create an annual calendar of fundraising activities.
  • Maintain donor and foundation records and ensure the accuracy and efficacy of the donor database.
  • Create monthly and annual fundraising reports.
  • Coordinate the sorting and handling of donor receipts.
  • Manage donor acknowledgment and sponsorship rights including thank you notes, phone calls and public signage.
  • Continuously evaluate all efforts and progress toward goals.

 

Required Abilities and Experience:

  • A strong commitment to Christian values and the willingness and ability to articulate them in everyday life.
  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in marketing, public affairs, fund development, or related discipline.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in a related field or role where consultative salesmanship and persuasion are utilized.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in grant writing and/or individual donor development.
  • The ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing in English.
  • Strong experience in public speaking.
  • The demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated success in securing support from private and/or public sources for Christian-centered educational and operational projects.
  • Demonstrated success in working as a member of a team and developing effective working relationships with Board members, staff, volunteers, the general public, and donors.
  • Commitment to professional ethics in working with highly confidential, sensitive information.
  • Comfort with ambiguity, the ability to respond adeptly to rapidly changing priorities, and ability to work well under pressure.
  • Extreme detail orientation and organization, with the strong ability to successfully multi-task.
  • Experience with the use of social media for marketing or fundraising campaigns.
  • Extensive computer skills, including intermediate or higher level proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint and Word) and experience working with electronic donor tracking systems/databases.

 

Preferred Abilities and Experience:

  • An MBA or Master’s degree in a related discipline.
  • Previous leadership experience in a fund development role in a not-for-profit environment.
